ITO SHIZUO

ITO SHIZUO
(1906–1953)
   Ito Shizuo was a poet from Nagasaki Prefecture who graduated from Kyoto University. His most famous work is Wagahito ni ataeru aika (Lamentation to My People, 1935). Hagiwara Sakutaro referred to Ito, one of the representative Romantic writers of his day, as the “last poet of Japan.” He was a contributor to the literary journal Shiki (Four Seasons) with Miyoshi Tatsuji, Nakahara Chuya, and Tachihara Michizo. His hometown in Nagasaki awards the Ito Shizuo Prize in his honor.
